LETTING GOD OFF THE HOOK

I’m not superstitious and don’t believe in ghosts, holy or otherwise. But defenders of faith need some help, especially in Denver where poor Tim Tebow is getting his ass kicked by the liberal media about praying on the football field.

The problem with asking a Christian to explain how God created Heaven and Earth is that the Christian has been programmed to lay it off on faith…which is a non-answer to anyone who understands faith is only required in the absence of evidence. Reasonable people have to wonder how a sensible human being can have faith in anything that has failed to produce the slightest sliver of evidence over thousands of years of questions and answers on the subject.

There is another answer the Christian can’t get to, because he’s been conditioned to respond with the faith dogma. But you have to put your brain in “open” mode to embrace it. Here it comes…wait for it…

…this system we humans use to transform water, rocks, sand and trees into skyscrapers and rocket ships to the moon is some kind-a wonderful. We’ve even got it down to cloning, genetic manipulation and birthin’ babies in petri dishes. And even as I write, we’re unlocking the mysteries of the Universe’s beginning in a far off black hole. Nothing but time stands between us and a comprehensive understanding of exactly how it all came to be.

But you don’t have to wait. I can tell you now that, sooner or later, it will occur to Christians that we have mislabeled this marvelous system of invention/creation/discovery that is responsible for the transformation of planetary flotsam and jetsam into useful tools. We’re calling it “technology.” However, if you were jerked out of the 4th Century and exposed to it, you would have another name for it. You’d call it “magic”.

The inscrutable fact is that what separates God’s achievements from human achievements is one simple element. In order to qualify as God, magic must be used. Yet, today’s “magic” is tomorrow’s “technology.”

For instance, if Jesus came back and explained the technology that allowed him to persuade everyone watching that he rose from the grave, there would be no further reason to believe he might have been the son of God. So long as it was “magic”, then it must have been God’s doing.

Are you ahead of me yet? This thing we call technology is the same stuff God used to create what there is. We’ve just been calling it “magic” because we didn’t understand it and for lack of explanations, we leaped to the notion that a magic wand was used.

Looked at through this filter, God and Science become symbiotic. They are the same process. When we unlock another secret, we move just a little closer to full understanding of how God or (insert favorite ghost) accomplished what he did.

If you’re a Christian and the hair on the back of your neck is bristling right now, you should ask yourself why. Is God not allowed to use technology? Is it possible that the preachers got it wrong and there is no magic wand? Is it possible that our under-educated ancestors had no better way to explain what they could not understand than to lay it off on “magic”? Is it possible that you are the victim of an ages-long massive mind-fuck designed to eradicate your individuality and shape you and the rest of the human race into a cohesive unit so that the enterprise of civilization could be successfully conducted?

I know what you’re thinking and I should have expected a thoughtful reaction. You’re thinking…maybe technology is the simple answer to all that God gets credit for, but hell…it won’t win football games.
